Friday, October 18th, 2019 Update

Please bring a small to medium sized pumpkin to school on Monday or Tuesday. We would like all students to have one by Wednesday, October 23rd. We will send them home at the end of the week on Friday so families can still use them for Halloween. We won't be carving the pumpkin at school. The pumpkins will be supporting our math, language arts and art programs. We also always accept donations as well.

SOCIAL STUDIES Support Requests

Do you have a relationship with India, Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine or local Indigenous Tribes?

Several classes (Ashby-Winters, Boshmann, Cooper and MacQueen) are currently putting together collections of artifacts of each of these populations to use with all four classes.

To give you an idea of artifacts we are looking for, Mrs. MacQueen has put together a Ukrainian Collection with the following items;

- folk tale book written in both English and Ukrainian (The Snow Grandparents -students act out)
-comic books in Ukrainian
-children book in Ukrainian
-traditional dancing costume pieces (headpiece, sash, beads, slippers)
-wooden beaded boxes
-pictures of children in traditional costumes from different regions of Ukraine
-pictures of traditional religious celebrations (Easter, Church Service, Wedding)
-pussy willows
-nesting dolls
-copy of the Ukrainian alphabet
-Ukrainian egg making kit

Really, anything that you think would enhance the learning of the culture and country. Please write a brief description of what the item is and it's cultural importance. We will return all items to you at the end of the school year. We will be sure to bag items carefully. If you wish to make any items donations, please mark your wishes on the bag that you send them in.

If you wish to send in traditional food or make a presentation for any one or all classes, please contact your child's individual teacher.

Thank you for your help!

Just quickly went through the paperwork coming in for our big field trip week and notice that I am still missing several student forms.

As for volunteers, I have too many volunteers for Monday and not enough for any of the other days,  with Tuesday and Thursday requiring 3 and 4 more. If you can volunteer or change your Monday day to one of the others let me know asap.

Updates October 8th, 2019

Good Morning! Please come prepared for the weather today!

Just a couple updates and reminders.

Open Minds
Please send in forms asap, including the one page stating how you will pay and your volunteer availability. Online fee payment will be added asap. We have put in a request downtown to have this added to your child's account but aren't sure how long it will take. Please continue to look back in order to pay online or send cash/cheque. When the fee is up on students accounts, I will also tweet out a message stating so. Thank you for your patience with this.

Pond Visit

We are so happy that we went to the pond for a visit in between these snowstorms. We were able to practice a Journaling practice which will support writing fall poems this week.

Novel Study
Students are just wrapping up writing about our Inquiry Question for the year, What Can We Learn About Our World Through Stories? Students brainstormed many ideas about what they have learned through the book, Anne of Green Gables. Look for their writing on the hallway bulletin board.

Our next Read Aloud book with be, Because of Winn Dixie by Kate DiCamillo.

Auburn Bay School is partnering with the Calgary Food Bank once again this October to help fight hunger in our community.

We Scare Hunger is made possible with the support of Help Hunger Disappear®, Campbell Canada's national hunger awareness and food drive program. Since 2008, Help Hunger Disappear® reminds us that we can all play a part in helping the more than 900,000 Canadians who rely on their local food banks every month.

The Auburn Bay School We Scare Hunger Campaign officially begins on Tuesday, October 1st and will end October 31st. We invite you to be a part of the change our students are working hard to create. Students have been asked to bring in food bank items throughout the next month Last year we brought in 1720 pounds of food. This year, our school goal is to collect 1800 pounds of food!

To give you an idea of how much food that is, the average family of 4 people receive an estimated 125 pounds worth of food, filling approximately 2 grocery carts per family. So, if we divvy up the 1720 pounds worth of food collected last year, this amount supported about 14 families, filling 28 grocery carts with food. (Calgary Food Bank) The Calgary Food Bank Wish List can be found here https://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/wishlist/

Please only send non-perishable donation items.

Together we can make a difference.

Thank you,

Auburn Bay School
